No need to be a geek. In 5 minutes, you'll understand what a GPX is, what it's for, and how to create one for your next running, cycling or trail session.
A GPX file is exactly that: a list of ingredients (GPS coordinates) which, in the right order, draw an itinerary on a map.
The file contains hundreds of small coordinate points.
Connected together, these points draw your complete route.
Strava, Garmin, Komoot, Suunto… everyone knows how to open it.
You see exactly where the session goes: distance, elevation, key points. No more bad surprises.
Imported into your Garmin, Suunto or Coros, the GPX guides you in real time during the session.
You know an awesome loop? Send the GPX to your mates and they can ride it identically.
On TriMates, adding a GPX to your session boosts sign-ups — people know what they're getting into.
4 steps, 3 minutes. You only need a free Strava account.
On the Strava app or strava.com, open the Routes tab. Click "Create a route."
Click your starting point, then the points you want to pass through. Strava automatically traces paths between your points.
Give it a name (e.g. "Bois de Vincennes Loop 10 km") and save.
On the route page, click the three little dots → "Export GPX." The .gpx file downloads to your device.
Tip: Komoot and Garmin Connect offer the exact same system. Look for "Export as GPX" in the share menu.
Once your GPX is ready, you can attach it to any session to make it even clearer and more attractive.
Go to Create a session and fill in the info.
Select your .gpx file — it appears directly on the map.
Participants grab the GPX in one click for their watch.
Create a session, add your GPX and find partners in a few clicks.
